5 Of My Favorite Beers At The Oregon Brewers Festival

Walking over the Hawthorne bring during the parade

The Oregon Brewers Festival is back for its 30th year. Although the festival started this past Wednesday it runs through Sunday at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. On Wednesday along with 600 of my fellow beer friends I marched in the Brewer's Parade to the festival. The parade was led by grand marshals John DeBenedetti and Mike Moscarelli of F.H. Steinbart Co., a local home brewing supplies store, and institution. Once we arrived at the festival they tapped the ceremonial keg of beer, this year an IPA from Hopworks Urban Brewery.

I skipped the long line to try this beer and instead of starting seeking out beers on the list I curated the night before. Let's skip the details of all of the beers that I tried and highlight my five favorite beers at the Oregon Brewers Festival. (Not in any particulator order)

Tigers in Tiny Spaces | American Style Pale Ale

This OBF first timer is ready to wow you with this balanced, fruity, hazy pale ale. The strawberry esters derive from the ale yeast used to ferment all the sweet malts: Rahr two-row, Weyermann Carafoam and Simpson’s Caramalt. Chinook hops give a nice piney/grapefruit backbone, while additional notes of peaches, candied citrus and a touch of vanilla come from the other hops used: Citra, Hop 522 and Loral. 5.6% ABV, 42 IBU

Heirloom Saison | Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer

Heirloom Saison blends a vintage strong saison aged in barrels for over 18 months with a special carbonic chardonnay cask version of Upright’s Saison Vert, a black lime wheat based brew. All of the hops – Mt. Hood, Columbia, Santiam, Liberty and Cascade – were late kettle additions to keep the bitterness in check. The finished beer has complex elements from the old beer and extra bright notes from the young portion, making for a truly unique blend just for the OBF. 6.9% ABV, 18 IBU

Ship of the Sun | Classic French & Belgian Style Saison

Ship of the Sun is a mixed fermentation saison, dry hopped with Styrian Goldings and East Kent Goldings. The complex grain bill includes pilsner, white wheat, flaked wheat, malted oats and acidulated malt and it’s fermented with a mixed culture of saccharomyces and brettanomyces, giving it an earthy funk complemented by a herbal and citrus hop character. Naturally conditioned in the keg, this beer is alive! 5.5% ABV, 24 IBU

El Wisco Mexican Lager | American Style Lager

El Wisco pours a bright gold with a rocky white head. Mild lemon candy, herbal tea and slight melon aromas arise from the late Lemondrop and Mt. Hood additions. Brewed from two-row pale, honey malt and flaked maize, this light bodied brew delivers clover honey and citrus flavor before ending with a crisp finish. 4.1% ABV, 13 IBU

Cal Estúpido | International Style Pilsener

“Cal estúpido,” or “Lime Stupid,” is a refreshing Mexican lager flavored with lime and a touch of sea salt. Flaked yellow corn joins Pilsner and Vienna malts in the mash tun, providing a light body and golden hue. Czech Saaz hops and Mexican lager yeast provide a clean, crisp lager profile. This beer is lagered for a few weeks after fermentation, at which point fresh lime juice and salt are added. 5% ABV, 18 IBU
